A recent survey of students at Indiana University showed that 80% of the students would be willing to support an affirmative action policy for black faculty at IU.
However, a majority of the students believed they were better qualified than whites to write for faculty positions in the College of Arts and Sciences. The results of poll were posted by College of Arts and Sciences Director Communications Joe Staley on Facebook and were subsequently picked up by the IndyStar.
Staley told IndyStar,
"An overwhelming 97 percent of the 1,000-plus responses were "agree or strongly agree." Most interesting: the race of respondents did not appear to impact the likelihood of accepting position, or whether they would be willing to accept the position."
He noted that the survey results demonstrated how far our nation has come in the field of race and diversity.
When asked to give their opinion on the use of affirmative action in the university, 60.8 percent of those polled stated they were for the policy. However, a majority of those polled were not sure how to define "affirmative action" and disagreed with Staley on this issue.
The race of respondents did not appear to impact the likelihood of accepting position.
